Mary Coy is a fourth-generation Charlestonian.  After being asked to write her own memories of growing up in Charleston, she realized what a wealth of Charleston memories were still untapped in folks all around her. Her book, To Hear Them Tell it: Memories of Growing Up in Charleston is a compilation of the stories she discovered when she tapped this wealth.  One of the persons whose memories she includes in her book is Marty Moseley, a treasured member of CCR.

The dispute between Russia and the Ukraine has been an ongoing issue in the news for many months.  This talk will consider the history of the relationship between Russia and the Ukraine and consider factors in going forward.

The Roman Emperor Trajan’s Dacian Wars saved Western civilization.  And yet, hardly any layperson knows about Dacia or its significance.  This lecture explores the role Dacia played in the preservation of the Roman Empire and examines the great efforts of emperors desiring to capture and retain present-day Transylvania.

Andy Brack, Statehouse Reporter and Publisher

Brack will outline historical, political, tax and other trends to highlight the pickle South Carolina lawmakers face as they try to move the state forward.  His talk will be wide-ranging on issues from taxes and ethic reform to what’s going to happen at the Statehouse in the year ahead.

CCR Relocating to College of Charleston’s North Campus for Upcoming Semester

The new and beautiful North Campus facility of the College of Charleston will be home to the Center for Creative Retirement for its Winter/Spring Lecture Series beginning January 6, 2015.

The facility has

  • Easy access at 526 and Paramount Drive, exit 15.

  • Accessibility for those with mobility challenges
  • State-of-the-art audio visual equipment
  • Excellent acoustics
  • Ergonomic seating
  • Multiple screens for visual presentations

The lecture series begins with the College of Charleston’s new president, Glenn McConnell, and his talk entitled, “Evolving Mission of the College of Charleston and the University of Charleston.”

The Center for Creative Retirement has been serving the vital, senior population of Charleston’s life-long learners for 22 years.

This year’s Center for Creative Retirement Holiday Luncheon will be held at the College of Charleston’s North Campus Facility at 3800 Paramount Drive, North Charleston 29405.  *See directions below.

Getting on 526 from West Ashley

Go about 3 miles to exit #15 – Paramount. Dorchester – exit to the right.

At the bottom of the ramp turn left onto Paramount Dr.  Immediately go under 526.  You’ll see the North Campus on the right just after the light.

Getting on 526 from 26

Go to exit marked West to Savannah – 212B.

Take exit #15 on your right – Dorchester Paramount.  After crossing Dorchester Road, stay to the right and go to the next light at Paramount Dr.  Turn right onto Paramount and immediately right into the parking lot of the North Campus.

1:00 A Mediterranean Diet for Today Patricia Moore Pastrides, cookbook author and wife of the president of the University of South Carolina Patricia Moore-Pastrides will share with us the delights and benefits of eating a Mediterranean diet. She will bring copies of her cookbooks, which will be available for purchase and signing after her talk. Joy Morris has worked for months to arrange this talk for CCR after hearing Ms. Moore-Pastrides speak. She has recommended her wholeheartedly as a presenter for CCR. Bring yourself and bring a friend.

2:30 If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Mont-St.-Michel Maxwell Mowry, CCR member and World Traveler Maxwell Mowry will share with us the visual wonders of France. He will recreate a whirlwind tour of France (with slides) that covered the country from south to north in only eight days. How wonderful to have the opportunity to enjoy these visuals on the large, twin screens of the new, North Campus, conference hall! 2:30: Don’t Believe Every Story

Jim Lundy, Writer, Poet, Musician

Jim will be playing songs from his CD as well as new songs written for the February Album Writing Month (FAWM) competition. In that competition, participants write 14 songs during the 28 days in February. He was one of 2 South Carolinians who won the challenge this year, and this is the third year he has completed the challenge.

Science and Religion
– DVD Series of 12 lectures led by Professor Lawrence M Principe,  professor of the History of Science, Medicine, and Technology and Professor of Chemistry at The Johns Hopkins University.   He will describe how science and religion are different and how are they similar in terms of questions, methods and sources of knowledge.   And reveal they have more in common than is generally believed.    Famous cases of Galileo and Darwin are examined as well as recent documents and events bring our discussions down to the present day.

1:00: What’s New in Wine?

Mike van Beyer and Brent Beam of Bottles Beverage Store, Mt. Pleasant

We will kick off the CCR season with something special!

The first hour will be a lecture on wine – what’s new in the wine world. This informative presentation will be given by Mike van Beyer, owner, and Brent Beam, manager, of Bottles Beverage in Mount Pleasant.

2:00: Wine Tasting, CCR Overview and Welcome Back Social

The 1:00 program will be followed by a wine tasting where you will be able to sample small amounts of the wines discussed during the lecture. Both Mike and Brent are extremely knowledgeable about wines and are available to answer all your questions. You will also have an opportunity to place case-lot orders for wines that you will then pick up at the Mount Pleasant store.

To help all of us learn about the exciting year we have planned for CCR, tables will be set up around the rooms with information about the CCR Fall line-up of Field Trips; Study Groups and Book Discussions. CCR’s Historian will also have a table displaying photographs, documents and memorabilia from our organization’s 21-year history.

For those of you who have not already registered, you will have the opportunity to register and pay for your membership at this time.

And there will be time to enjoy visiting with each other.
Note: The Social Committee will have a table of appetizers and we will have water, ice tea, and coffee as usual.

I have started a Facebook Group for CCR – any CCR member can join. The purpose of the group is to provide an informal way to :

ask for recommendations from fellow CCRers about doctors, repair people, cleaning people, etc.

comment on movies seen recently, and CCR lectures

let people know about upcoming events of possible interest

borrow things from fellow CCRers

any anything else legal you can think of!
